What a players card actually does
Casino loyalty programs are free to join, but the card is not a magic discount pass. It gives the operator a way to attach eligible gaming and resort activity to your account. On slots and video poker, insert or tap the card and make sure your name appears before playing. At a staffed table, hand the card to the dealer when you buy in so the pit can rate the session.
The important word is tracked. If the casino cannot connect a wager or eligible purchase to your account, you should not assume it will be credited later. Check the screen, app or rewards desk if the card does not register.
Points, tier credits, comps and offers are different things
Vegas loyalty programs use several kinds of rewards, and they are easy to confuse. Modern programs do not usually publish one universal 'bet this much, get this comp' formula. MGM Rewards, for example, says eligible slot, video-poker and electronic-game earnings vary with wager, game type and denomination. Other operators use their own formulas and can change them.
The practical lesson is simple: use the card consistently, but do not choose a worse game or increase your betting just to chase points. A small reward does not compensate for extra gambling losses.
How table-game play is rated
Table games are normally rated differently from machines. Operators commonly consider factors such as average wager, time played and game type. MGM's current rules explicitly describe those factors for table-game earning. The dealer or supervisor records the rating, so present your card when you sit down and ask the rewards desk later if you need to understand how the program treats a particular game.
Your actual win or loss in one session is not the same thing as the rating. A lucky player can still have substantial tracked action, and a losing player should not assume the casino will reimburse losses with equivalent comps.
What 'theo' means — and why casinos care
You may hear regular players talk about 'theo', short for theoretical loss. In broad terms, a casino can estimate the expected value of your play from the amount wagered, the game and the time or number of decisions. That expected figure is more useful to a loyalty system than whether you happened to win or lose tonight.

Which programs matter on the Strip
Large resort groups operate portfolio-wide programs. MGM Rewards covers MGM Resorts destinations, while Caesars Rewards covers Caesars properties; The Venetian has Venetian Rewards and Wynn/Encore operates Wynn Rewards. The names, earning currencies, status years, partner benefits and redemption rules are not interchangeable.
If you are staying and playing mostly within one resort group, concentrating eligible activity can be more useful than collecting starter balances everywhere. If you prefer different casinos, there is no need to let loyalty dictate the trip.
Can hotel, dining and entertainment spend count?
Often yes, but only when the purchase is eligible and attached correctly to the account. MGM Rewards currently distinguishes gaming earnings from eligible non-gaming spend and publishes separate earning rules. Other programs do likewise with their own exclusions.
Charge eligible resort spending to the room or present the membership number where the operator permits it, then keep receipts until credits post. Taxes, gratuities, third-party outlets, package components and complimentary redemptions may be excluded, so check the current program terms rather than assuming every dollar on property earns.
How to use comps without letting comps use you
Join before you play, track the gambling budget separately from rewards, and treat any points, free play, meal credit or room offer as a rebate on activity you were already comfortable doing. Never make an extra bet merely to reach the next tier or because a host offer feels 'too valuable to waste'.
If an offer requires a stay, resort fee, travel cost or a particular amount of play, compare the whole trip cost. A discounted room can still be poor value if it changes the dates, property or gambling level you would otherwise choose.
Hosts, discretionary comps and asking at the end
High-value or consistently rated players may be contacted by a casino host, but there is no universal spend threshold that guarantees one. Hosts work within property and program rules and may review tracked play when discussing offers or eligible charges.
For ordinary visitors, the rewards desk is the best place for account questions. If you think a session was not rated or want to know whether points can cover an eligible charge, ask politely before checkout. Do not assume a staff member can retroactively create play that was never tracked.
