Las Vegas follows U.S. federal immigration rules
There is no Nevada tourist visa. International visitors to Las Vegas must meet the same U.S. entry rules as visitors arriving in New York, Los Angeles or any other U.S. destination. Your passport, nationality, travel history and purpose of travel determine the appropriate route.
The two common tourism paths are the Visa Waiver Program with an approved ESTA, or a B-2 / combined B1/B2 visitor visa. Some travellers have different arrangements, so use the official U.S. government tools for your specific passport rather than copying another traveller’s answer.
Visa Waiver Program: tourism for up to 90 days
The U.S. Department of State Visa Waiver Program page says eligible citizens or nationals of participating countries may travel for tourism or business for stays of 90 days or less without first obtaining a visitor visa, provided they have an approved ESTA and satisfy all program requirements.
VWP admission is designed for short permitted visitor activities. Employment, credit-bearing study and permanent residence are not permitted simply because you have ESTA. If your purpose is not ordinary tourism/business visitor activity, identify the correct visa category before travel.
ESTA is permission to travel, not a guarantee of admission
ESTA stands for Electronic System for Travel Authorization. Apply only through the official U.S. government ESTA system linked by CBP; lookalike commercial sites may charge extra. CBP currently lists the ESTA application fee as US$40.27.
An approved ESTA generally remains valid for multiple trips for up to two years or until the linked passport expires, whichever comes first. It cannot be extended; if it expires or relevant passport/details change, a new application may be required. Final admission is decided by U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the port of entry.
Who may be excluded from using the Visa Waiver Program
Eligibility is more than holding a passport from a participating country. U.S. law excludes some otherwise-VWP travellers based on certain dual nationalities or travel/presence in specified countries. The State Department currently lists restrictions involving travel to or presence in countries including Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen since 1 March 2011, and Cuba on or after 12 January 2021, subject to limited exceptions.
Do not try to self-diagnose a complicated travel-history case from a summary. Read the current official VWP eligibility rules and, if you are not eligible for ESTA, investigate the visitor-visa process before buying inflexible flights.
Visitor visas: B-2 or combined B1/B2
A foreign national travelling for tourism generally needs a B-2 or combined B1/B2 visitor visa unless eligible to travel under the VWP or another exemption. The State Department’s current visitor-visa application fee is US$185, with possible additional issuance fees depending on nationality.
The process normally includes the DS-160 online nonimmigrant visa application and, where required, a consular interview. Interview availability varies widely. The State Department publishes global visa wait times and advises applicants to apply early.
Do not leave a visitor visa until the last minute
ESTA and a visitor visa are not interchangeable versions of the same quick form. A full visa can require documentation, payment, an appointment and processing after interview. Since September 2025, the State Department says nonimmigrant visa applicants should generally schedule their interview in their country of residence or nationality, subject to designated-location rules.
If you know you need a visa, start with the official embassy/consulate instructions for your country. Do not book a non-refundable Vegas package on the assumption that an appointment or approval will arrive by a particular date.
Passport validity and document consistency
Your passport must satisfy the requirements of the entry route you are using. Visitor-visa guidance generally calls for a passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended U.S. stay unless a country-specific agreement provides an exemption. VWP travellers also need to meet the program’s passport requirements.
Use the same passport for ESTA and travel. If you obtain a new passport, your old ESTA does not simply transfer to the new document. Make sure names and biographical details match across your airline booking, passport and application.
Connecting through another U.S. airport before Vegas
If you fly London–Los Angeles–Las Vegas, Los Angeles is normally where you first present yourself for U.S. entry; the onward LAS flight is domestic. The same principle applies to other U.S. gateways. Allow enough connection time for immigration, customs/baggage procedures and security requirements.
If you fly internationally direct to LAS, you complete the U.S. arrival process in Las Vegas. Either way, the federal entry rules are the same.
What border officers may consider
A visa or ESTA authorisation allows you to seek entry; it does not create an unconditional right to enter. CBP determines admissibility and the period/status of admission. Be ready to answer normal questions about why you are visiting, where you are staying and how long you intend to remain.
Carry practical evidence relevant to your trip—your hotel details and onward/return plans, for example—without turning your hand luggage into an immigration dossier. If your situation involves prior immigration problems, arrests, unusual employment plans or other complexity, get qualified advice rather than relying on a destination guide.
Working remotely, studying or doing paid work
A holiday entry category is not a general work permit. The VWP page specifically identifies employment and credit-bearing study as activities not permitted under that program. Business visitor activities are narrower than taking U.S. employment.
If the real purpose of your Vegas trip includes work, study, media activity or another regulated purpose, check the correct U.S. visa category before departure. Do not describe a non-tourist trip as tourism just because a conference, performance or work event happens to be in Las Vegas.
Common ESTA and visa mistakes
Common avoidable mistakes include using a third-party ESTA website without realising it, applying against an old passport, assuming prior ESTA approval guarantees future eligibility, confusing a 90-day VWP maximum with permission to remain for any personally chosen period, and booking before checking a known travel-history restriction.
Another mistake is treating social-media advice as fresher than the government source. Rules, fees, screening policy and appointment procedures can change faster than travel articles.
Official links to use
Use the U.S. Department of State Tourism & Visit portal to determine whether you need a visitor visa or may qualify for VWP travel. Use the official CBP ESTA site for an ESTA application. Use the embassy/consulate instructions linked by the State Department for a visa application.

Do not pay for an ESTA through a search-ad lookalike without checking the web address. The official application is on the U.S. Customs and Border Protection ESTA site.
